Visa sponsorship jobs in the UK
In the UK, sponsorship means an employer that holds a Home Office sponsor licence agrees to sponsor you for a work visa, usually the Skilled Worker route. You cannot sponsor yourself, and you cannot use a general job offer to apply. The employer has to be licensed, the role has to be eligible, and the employer has to assign you a Certificate of Sponsorship.
That is why searching for sponsored work is really two questions at once: is this employer allowed to sponsor, and is this particular job open to sponsorship. Most job boards answer neither.
The official register of licensed sponsors
The Home Office publishes a register of every organisation licensed to sponsor workers. Each entry shows the organisation name, its town or city, its rating, and which routes it can sponsor on. You can download it yourself from the GOV.UK register of licensed sponsors: workers.
A rating of A means the licence is in good standing. A B rating means the sponsor is on an action plan to fix compliance issues and is limited in issuing new certificates. The route column matters too, since a licence for one route does not permit sponsorship on another.
Here is the trap that costs people weeks. Holding a licence does not mean a company will sponsor you, for this role, right now. Large licensed employers advertise thousands of roles they will only fill with someone who already has the right to work. A register tells you who is permitted to sponsor. It is not a list of sponsored vacancies, and it is not a job search.

Sectors where UK sponsorship is common
Sponsorship clusters where employers cannot fill roles domestically. That is a structural fact about a labour market, not a trend, which is why the same sectors keep appearing.
- Health and social care. The largest single source of sponsored hiring in the UK, driven by persistent vacancies in nursing, care and allied health, and made cheaper for employers by the Health and Care Worker route.
- IT and engineering. Software, data, cyber security and chartered engineering roles where specific skills are scarce and salaries clear the thresholds comfortably.
- Education. Secondary teaching in shortage subjects such as maths, physics and computing, plus further education in technical subjects.
- Academia and research. Universities and research institutes sponsor routinely, and they also know the Global Talent and academic routes well.
- Construction. Site management, quantity surveying and specialist trades, where project pipelines outpace the available workforce.
- Hospitality at senior level. Head chefs, restaurant and hotel management, where the skill level of the occupation qualifies even when entry-level roles do not.
How to tell if a UK job posting really offers sponsorship
Wording that points towards sponsorship: sponsorship available, we are a licensed sponsor, Certificate of Sponsorship can be provided, Skilled Worker visa supported, we welcome applications from candidates requiring sponsorship.
Wording that rules it out: must have an existing right to work in the UK, we are unable to provide sponsorship, applicants must not require sponsorship now or in the future, settled status required.
Silence is the hard case, and it is the most common one. Most adverts say nothing at all, which is exactly why keyword filters on generic job boards mislead. A filter that matches the word visa will happily return an advert that uses it in the sentence explaining you need one already.

UK sponsorship questions and answers
Which jobs qualify for the Skilled Worker visa?
The role has to appear on the Home Office list of eligible occupations, sit at or above the required skill level, and pay at or above the going rate set for that occupation. The employer must also hold a sponsor licence covering the Skilled Worker route. Eligibility is decided by the occupation code the employer assigns, not by the job title on the advert.
What is a Certificate of Sponsorship?
A Certificate of Sponsorship is an electronic record a licensed employer assigns to you before you apply for your visa. It confirms the job, the occupation code, the salary and the start date. It is not a work permit on its own, and you cannot obtain one yourself. Only the sponsoring employer can issue it.
Can I change employers on a Skilled Worker visa?
Yes, but not freely. The new employer must also be a licensed sponsor and must assign you a new Certificate of Sponsorship, and you normally have to apply to update your visa before you start. You can usually keep working for the old employer until the new permission is granted.
Do I need a degree to be sponsored in the UK?
Not always. The Skilled Worker route is based on the skill level of the occupation rather than your qualifications, so many roles in care, construction, hospitality management and technical trades qualify without a degree. Some occupations do require specific qualifications or professional registration.
Can I bring my family on a UK work visa?
Most sponsored work routes allow a partner and children under 18 to apply as dependants, and dependants of Skilled Worker visa holders can usually work. Rules differ by route and have tightened for some categories, so check the current dependant rules for your specific visa on GOV.UK before you plan a move.
Does the Graduate visa need a sponsor?
No. The Graduate visa is unsponsored and is open to people who have completed an eligible UK degree. You can work in almost any job while it lasts, which many people use as a bridge into a Skilled Worker role with an employer who can sponsor them later.
What is the Health and Care Worker route?
It is a version of the Skilled Worker visa for eligible medical, nursing, allied health and adult social care roles, sponsored by the NHS, an NHS supplier or a licensed care provider. It has lower application fees and no immigration health surcharge, which is why health and care employers sponsor so frequently.
How do I check if a UK employer is licensed to sponsor?
Search the Home Office register of licensed sponsors, which lists every organisation holding a worker sponsor licence along with its rating and the routes it can use. Being on the register only means the employer is permitted to sponsor. It does not mean the role you are looking at comes with sponsorship.
